Press brake bending length


Press brake bending length is the main important parameter (or machine capacities) to justify the possibilities of the press brake machine for customer needs. The bending length means the width of bending i.e. maximum dimensions for the part to perform the bend.
The bending length is the parameter to inform the user about the max. size of length of his part. The length is based on the real dimensional length of press brake upper beam or traverse and the length of table. In general it should be possible in reality to make the bending length a little bit bigger with the installation of tooling with side are outside of the table-traverse position but to make the good bending this dimensions should be very small for the correct and precision clamping. Moreover this possibility depends of the used press brake tools system.
Because press brake manufacturers try to operate with standard sheet metal the usual dimensions for bending length according to the model are 850 or 835 mm; 1250 mm or near; 1500 mm or near; 2000 mm or near; 2500 mm or near; 3000 mm or near; 4000 mm or near; 6000 mm or near etc. Because of the standard press brake tools lengths the manufacturers consider the length nearly to 1 meter gradation but not the similar (for example 3 m machine with the official description of 3150 mm as the max. bending length).
Normally in a lot of cases the bending length could be identified based on the numeric value as the part of model of the press brake machine, for example 4016 (40 tons, 1600 mm), 80-25 (80 tons, 2,5 meters), 3-100 (3 meters, 100 tons), 31120 (3100 mm, 120 tons) etc. These principles are basic for the manufacturers because could be used for identification of capacities of each model in production.

Bending length is the parameter for bending only with frontal units. What does it mean? The press brake has side shoulders and in the area of table and the frontal bending there is no any collision between shoulders. But if the sheet metal will be pushed deeply into the press brake it will be in contact with shoulders in in this area the bending length should be not bigger than the distance between shoulders.
Bending length is connected with other important parameter of press brake such as bending force. The connection is important because to perform the bend for the required length the corresponding force is required depends of thickness and material. Finally this means that if the press brake even has the big length but the max. possible force is low it could be used only to bend for the full length the thin materials. The correspondence of bending length and stroke could be calculated based on other parameters to receive the values necessary for obtain of bending.
To perform the bending for the full length according to the length of beam and table - the press brake tools should be installed at the all necessary length. The length of tools could be longer (if possible with clamps) but could not be shorter because otherwise the correct deformation will be not achieved.
